I’ve been toying with the idea of getting another cat here to join Lucky over the past couple of years but never really moved on the idea due to a variety of reasons. A big part of that was that I thought that my sis would provide the feline companion. After a series of abortive attempts which included raiding a feral colony, a run-in with the Annex Cat Rescue people, S’ stray off the street, and another stray on the street who doesn’t look likely to come in from the cold any time soon I’ve decided to take a gander at the Toronto Humane Society’s selection. There have been a couple of news articles in the past week telling how they are stuffed to the rafters with cats and are now literally giving them away.
This seemed to be a sign that the household here might be blessed with the additional yowling of a demanding feline. It also might redress the seeming injustice that the bounty of others have had in acquiring cats. Over the past year, I know of at least three friends who seem to have cats just drop into their laps. I’m wandering around with my eyes peeled for one and have ended up with squat.
Ok, so walked quickly on down to the Humane Society yesterday afternoon with the express aim of looking for a youngish male. Lucky is an older female and may be more amenable to that age and sex group. Can anyone say “cougar”? hehehe
Well, despite the fact that there are a LOT of cats down there, they all seem to be primarily female and older. If I was looking for a cat or two for my place, then, all I have to do is simply close my eyes and point and I’d be out of there as soon as they can fill out the forms and stuff the chosen feline into a box. Trying to find a youngish male seems to be out of the question for now. I may go back down there later on today or tomorrow…the staff says that they’re cycling them through as quickly as they are adopted so there may be hope yet.

Years ago, I heard that when it comes to stories there are only about 70-odd different themes that they can all take. While reading Genesis Protocol it feels as if I am following one of those threads. If there was any book that has a paint-by-numbers type of feel to it then this is it. *spoilers alert* You have the secret government facility, the beautiful but brainy girl, the low-level grunt who’s seen it all, the mad scientist, the corrupt government official and, of course, an enemy that is a mix of Alien (with acidic blood) and Predator (unstoppable hunting terminator).
Through the first couple of chapters, I thought that it was some sort of hack who had a bit of a fetish going on with military weaponry but I glanced at the back for the author’s info and I was surprised to see that this is the same writer who’s done numerous short stories for the Star Trek universe. My recommendations? For the reader, avoid this title and, for the author, stick to Star Trek short stories.

Southern Ontario is in the midst of a major storm at the moment; I was up earlier and thought that it may have passed us by but right now it’s really coming down which may put paid to any ideas of major cycling rides for the rest of this year. I’m afraid that the last couple of months have really turned out be disappointing for cycling and my mileage this year is a lot less than what I had hoped it would be. I think I am just shy of 6,000 kms but we will see…not really in the mood to add it up just yet.
There is still less than two weeks left before the end of the year but I may once again be heading to Mtl to deal with my Mother’s wrist since it has not healed well and there is an x-ray of it coming up. Anyways, fingers crossed that all of the white stuff out there melts after Xmas in order for me to get some mileage in. Although I do love a white Xmas.
